About the Pali Department
The Pali Department at Mahabodhi Mahavidyalaya, Nalanda, plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the ancient language of Pali — the language of the Theravāda Buddhist canon and one of the cornerstones of India’s philosophical and spiritual traditions. Situated near the historic ruins of Nalanda, a world-renowned center of Buddhist learning, the department serves as a bridge between India’s ancient wisdom and modern academic inquiry.
The department offers students a deep understanding of Pali literature, grammar, and Buddhist philosophy. Through scholarly study, translation work, and research, the Pali Department nurtures a new generation of scholars who are committed to keeping the intellectual legacy of ancient Nalanda alive.
